Steve Murray Named Assistant Athletics Director at Macalester

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Macalester College Director of Athletics Kim Chandler announces the hiring of Steve Murray as Assistant Athletics Director, effective June 1. Murray will handle NCAA compliance for Macalester's 21 intercollegiate athletic programs as well as internal operations and physical education.

"I have enjoyed the experiences and relationships I have built over the last nine years with Macalester's faculty, staff, and students," Murray said. "I am excited about this new opportunity to build on these relationships and serve our student-athletes and coaches in a larger role as an Assistant Athletics Director at Macalester College."

For the past nine years, Murray has been the head strength and conditioning coach, as well as the director of the Deno Fitness Center, at Macalester. He was responsible for the athletic development of the varsity athletic programs, designing and implementing the strength, speed, agility and quickness programs for all varsity athletes. Prior to coming to Macalester, Murray also worked in strength and conditioning at three other Division III institutions – Hamline University in St. Paul, Marietta College in Ohio, and Augsburg College in Minneapolis. He has also worked with the football programs at UW-Eau Claire and St. Olaf College.

Murray attended the University of Minnesota, where he played football, and graduated with a degree in sports management with a minor in business.  He also earned his Master of Education in Applied Kinesiology from the University of Minnesota and a Master in Business Administration from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. He has been certified by the National Strength and Conditioning Association since 2006.

"We are thrilled to have Steve continue to contribute to the development of our student-athletes in this new role for him," Chandler said. "He has done so much for our athletic programs from a performance standpoint, and he has made connections across campus through his work in the Deno Fitness Center. We look forward to having Steve expand his impact on our athletic department and on campus in this administrative position."

Macalester will conduct a national search for a strength and conditioning coach, with a potential start date of August 1.
