BLOOMINGTON, Minn. -- The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) announced its Athlete of the Week award winners for men's and women's cross country and golf on Tuesday. Student-athletes from Carleton, Macalester, Saint Benedict and St. Thomas claimed the Conference's weekly honors for September 4 – 10, 2017.

The MIAC Athlete of the Week awards are nominated and selected each week by the Conference's sports information directors. Throughout the fall season, team sports (football, volleyball and soccer) Athletes of the Week will be recognized on Monday afternoons, with individual sports (cross country and golf) announced on Tuesday afternoons. The winners of the latest Athlete of the Week awards are listed below, along with details on their outstanding performances.

St. Thomas sophomore runner Karl Wachter took fourth overall in a field of 78 finishers at the MSU-Moorhead Twilight. After finishing as the Tommies' 17th runner at the MIAC Championships last October, Wachter flipped the switch to begin 2017, finishing his first race of the new season in 18:53 to lead the way for St. Thomas on the 6,000-meter course. Wachter was the third collegian finisher in the race, ten seconds behind a pair of Division II student-athletes.

Junior Saint Benedict runner Morgan Pierce claimed first-place at the Luther All-American Invite in Decorah, Iowa over the weekend with a time of 18:57.1, more than 10 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. Pierce tied for the 12th-best time in CSB history in the 5K race, which featured more than 100 runners. She has now finished first or second in each of her last three regular season races.

Macalester senior Jack Buan tied for first-place at the Cobber Invitational over the weekend, carding rounds of 73 and 74 for a tournament total of 147. The finish marked Buan's first tournament victory at Macalester, achieving the feat at an event that included MIAC members Carleton, St. Olaf and Concordia, as well as Division II Bemidji State.

Alyssa Akiyama notched a nearly flawless final-round, two-under par 70 to tie for medalist honors at the 20-team Wartburg Fall Invitational, marking her third victory in just 12 career tournaments. She finished with a one-under 143 total for the weekend, establishing a new 36-hole school record. Her performance helped the Knights erase a nine-shot deficit entering the final round and claim their second victory to begin the fall.
