MIAC Athletes of the Week – Nov. 13, 2017

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. -- The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) announced its Athlete of the Week award winners in football and hockey on Monday. Student-athletes from Augsburg, Gustavus, Hamline and Saint John's claimed the Conference's weekly honors for Nov. 6-12, 2017.

The winners of the latest Athlete of the Week awards are listed below, along with details on their award-winning performances. This week, Gustavus had a pair of student-athletes honored, while Augsburg, Hamline and Saint John's each had one.

The MIAC Athlete of the Week awards are nominated and selected each week by the Conference's sports information directors. Throughout the fall season, team sports (football and hockey) will be recognized on Monday afternoons, with individual sports (swimming and diving) announced on Tuesday afternoons.

MIAC Football Offensive Player of the Week
Michael Veldman
Gustavus Adolphus College
Jr. – Quarterback
Becker, Minn.

After missing the previous four games due to injury, Gustavus quarterback Michael Veldman returned to the lineup for the 2017 finale, completing 20-of-28 passes for 322 yards and four touchdowns in a 52-0 shutout against Carleton. Veldman averaged a MIAC-high 321.8 passing yards per game in his six starts this season.

MIAC Football Defensive Player of the Week
Matt Berkner
Gustavus Adolphus College

Jr. – Linebacker
Sleepy Eye, Minn.

Junior linebacker Matt Berkner collected eight tackles – including 1.5 tackles for loss – and his team-leading second interception of the season in Gustavus' 52-0 victory over Carleton. Berkner was a key part of a Gustie defense that recorded its first shutout over a Conference opponent since 2014 on Saturday.

Naufahu Anitoni
Saint John's University

Jr. – Punter
Fairfield, Calif. | Justin-Siena

Saint John's punter Naufahu Anitoni averaged 42.6 yards on five punts in the Johnnies' 10-3 victory over Concordia on Saturday. In a game in which field position proved crucial, Anitoni pinned the Cobbers' inside their own six-yard line three times, with punts downed at the Concordia one-, two-, and six-yard lines.

MIAC Men's Hockey Athlete of the Week
Eric Brenk
Augsburg

Jr. – Forward
Moorhead, Minn.

Eric Brenk had a four-point weekend to help the Auggies remain unbeaten with a sweep of Bethel in the opening series of Conference play. The junior forward contributed a power-play goal in Augsburg's 7-4 win on Friday, then added a pair of goals – including a shorthanded score – with an assist in the Auggies' first game in front of their home crowd on Saturday.

MIAC Women's Hockey Athlete of the Week
Sarah Bobrowski
Hamline University

St. Paul, Minn. | Hill-Murray

Senior forward Sarah Bobrowski had a big week for the Pipers, scoring four goals and logging five assists in three Hamline victories last week. Bobrowski scored in each of the Pipers' wins, finding the net twice in the team's 8-0 victory at Saint Benedict on Thursday night. She now ranks second in the MIAC with six points in Conference play so far this season.
