Carleton dropped a tough 34-19 game to Gustavus Saturday, but Knights' linebacker Mitch Heflin (Wayzata, Minn.) turned in an eye-catching defensive performance in defeat. The sophomore racked up the most total tackles and tackles-for-a-loss in the conference in Week 10 and made plays all over the field for the Carleton defense. For his performance, Heflin was named the MIAC Football Defensive Player-of-the-Week.
Heflin made 13 tackles Saturday - six solo and seven assists - with 3.0 tackles-for-a-loss against Gustavus. The Gusties managed just 23 yards on Heflin's 13 stops, and it was his third-straight game with double-digit tackles. His 13 tackles and three TFL led the MIAC Saturday, and his six solo stops ranked third. This season, Heflin's 59 total tackles rank 11th in the MIAC. he has 29 solo tackles and 30 assists to go along with 3.5 tackles-for-a-loss, and he averages 10.0 tackles per game in conference play.
Saturday's loss dropped Carleton a game below .500 overall at 4-5, and the team is now 2-5 in the conference, along in seventh place in the MIAC standings. The Knights conclude the 2013 season Saturday at home. Carleton will host Augsburg at 1 p.m. in the final regular-season game for both teams.
