Maple Grove, Minn. / Osseo
The Augsburg football team nearly upset No. 18-ranked St. Thomas Saturday, as the Auggies lost by just a field goal, 17-14. Augsburg's offense received a huge performance from sophomore Joey Sonnenfeld (Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo) in defeat. The wideout had a huge day, scoring one of the Auggies' two touchdowns and going over the 100-yard mark in receiving yards. For his performance, Sonnenfeld was named the MIAC Football Offensive Player-of-the-Week.
Sonnenfeld was spectacular against St. Thomas' tough defense, hauling in seven catches for 113 yards a touchdown. His 50-yard touchdown catch early in the second quarter helped Augsburg pull within a point at 7-6. This season, Sonnenfeld leads the MIAC in receiving yards (797), receiving yards per game (99.6) and receiving touchdowns (10) and he ranks second in yards per catch (16.6). His 10 receiving touchdowns are tied for the eighth most in NCAA Division III.
With Saturday's narrow loss, Augsburg moved to .500 overall at 4-4, and 3-4 in the MIAC. All four Auggie losses have come to nationally-ranked conference foes, with three of the four coming by a total of eight points. Saturday, Sonnenfeld and his teammates will step outside the conference as they host Macalester for a nonconference game in Minneapolis. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
