Gustavus hosted its annual Twin Cities Classic over the weekend and got a standout performance from one of its senior leaders to help the Gusties finish fourth in the talented field. Gustavus' Matt Jensen (Edina, Minn.) earned a tie for second place with a three-day total of 222 (8-over-par) thanks largely to an exceptionally clutch final round. For his career-best performance, Jensen was named the MIAC Men's Golf Athlete-of-the-Week.
Jensen started the TCC with a 3-over 75 Saturday, then followed with a 5-over 77 Sunday, and sat in 22nd place following the tournament's first 36 holes. However, Jensen regrouped with his best round of the season - an even-par 70 - at Le Sueur Country Club Monday to rocket up the leader board into a tie for second place, individually. The runner-up finish is the best of Jensen's collegiate career, and equaled the best finish by a MIAC player in the 100-golfer field. In 10 rounds this season, Jensen is averaging 76.4 strokes, which is the 13th best average in the MIAC. Jensen has a pair of top-five finishes this season.
The Gusties and Jensen hope to keep the good times rolling this
weekend, as they enter the 2013 MIAC Golf Championships as the
defending champions. The three-day, 54-hole conference championship
tournament will be held Saturday, Sunday and Monday at Bunker Hills
Golf Course in Coon Rapids, Minn. The first two rounds begin at
11:20 a.m., with Monday's final round teeing off at 9 a.m. An
awards ceremony will conclude the tournament Monday afternoon.
