BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – The University of St. Thomas won its seventh consecutive Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Playoff Championship on Saturday with a 62-56 victory over Gustavus Adolphus College.
The victory granted UST an automatic berth in the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Tournament and extended the Toms' streak of consecutive Conference wins to 54.
Playing without standout center Hannah Spaulding for the second consecutive postseason game, the Tommies found a way to overcome. Senior guard Maddie Wolkow led the way with a career-high five three-point conversions, finishing the game with 17 points. Lucia Renikoff contributed 13 points as well, while forward Lauren Fischer hauled in eight rebounds for St. Thomas.
Gustavus gave the Tommies a fight throughout, jumping out to a 13-7 lead in the first half and staying within striking distance for the entirety of the contest. Senior post Miranda Rice led the Gusties with 13 points, while forward Kendall Thompson registered a 13-10 double-double.
St. Thomas received the MIAC Playoff championship plaque as well as the Conference's automatic bid to the 2018 NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament. Gustavus and the rest of the MIAC's top teams will await Monday's NCAA Tournament selection announcement to find out if they will join the Tommies in the Big Dance.
