Bloomington, Minn. / Jefferson
Reigning MIAC Women's Golf MVP Molly Erickson (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) added her name to another spot in the record books with her fantastic performance at the Division III Midwest Classic over the weekend. The St. Olaf senior earned medalist honors with her first-place finish, and shattered the Ole 36-hole scoring record by five strokes. Erickson finished just 2-over-par over the course of the two-day event to finish first among a field of 96 golfers. For her record-setting performance, Erickson was named the MIAC Women's Golf Athlete-of-the-Week.
The St. Olaf star grabbed the lead during Saturday's first round action at The Jewel Golf Club in Lake City, Minn., and never looked back. She was magnificent over the first 18 holes, shooting a 1-under par 71 and grabbing a three-shot lead. She added a 3-over-par 75 on Sunday to finish with a 2-over-par 146 for the weekend and a six-shot victory over the rest of the field. Erickson led the Oles (669) to a fourth-place team finish in the 17-team field. Thus far in 2012, Erickson is again atop the MIAC leader board, as her average of 78.0 strokes per round (18 holes) ranks first in the conference, and she's finished in the Top 10 individually in all three tournament appearances.
Erickson and her teammates will be back in action this weekend looking for more school-record scores at the Carleton Invitational. The two-day tournament will run Saturday and Sunday at the Northfield GC. After that, the Oles will take part in the Gustavus Invitational Sept. 29-30 before starting the defense of their 2011 MIAC Women's Golf Championship. The 2012 MIAC meet will be held Oct. 6-8 at Bunker Hills, Minn., in Coon Rapids, Minn.
