Wayzata, Minn. / Benilde-St. Margaret's
The St. Olaf women's hockey team scored a big sweep of Hamline to remain in the thick of the MIAC Playoff hunt. The second victory featured an offensive explosion, with most of the damage done by senior star Margot Fleming (Wayzata, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's), as she had a hat trick and five total points in the Oles' 6-1 victory. For her big performance and role in the sweep, Fleming was named the MIAC Women's Hockey Athlete-of-the-Week.
Fleming took three shots and had an even plus-minus rating Friday as she helped St. Olaf score a 2-0 victory and set the stage for her huge Saturday performance. In the second victory, Fleming had a hand in each of the Oles' five first-period points. She scored the team's first, third and fifth goals, and assisted on the other two to get her hat trick and five points all in the first 20 minutes. This season, Fleming has 11 goals and three assists for 14 points. She leads the MIAC in power-play goals (six), is third in total goals and seventh in points. Her seven conference goals rank second, as do her 10 points in MIAC play.
Thanks to the sweep, the Oles pulled to even in conference play at 4-4 while improving to 4-11 overall. St. Olaf now has eight points in the MIAC standings and is alone in fifth place. Fleming and company have a big series coming up this weekend with a home-and-home conference showdown against Bethel. Friday's game will be on the Oles' home ice in Northfield at 7:30 p.m., and the puck drops for Saturday's game at the Royals' rink at 3 p.m.
