Kiecker named Saint Mary's head volleyball coach

WINONA, Minn. — After qualifying for the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Playoffs each of the past four seasons, the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota volleyball team will begin its 2017 "Drive for Five" with a new chauffeur at the wheel.

Jackie Kiecker, who has spent the previous four seasons as the Cardinals' assistant coach under then-head coach Mike Lester, was named the Cardinals' head coach, Saint Mary's athletic director Nikki Fennern announced Monday.

"Jackie's Division I playing experience, combined with her Division III coaching experience at multiple institutions, bring vast wisdom to the program," said Fennern. "Having been a part of multiple conference-tournament teams as a member of the Saint Mary's coaching staff, she understands what it takes to compete at the highest levels of the MIAC while making the student athlete experience paramount.

"I look forward to her leadership in continuing and enhancing the rich tradition of Cardinal volleyball."

"I'm very excited about this next chapter in my coaching career and I can not wait to get things started," said Kiecker. "I want to thank Nikki Fennern, the hiring committee, and the administration for this opportunity.

"I have enjoyed being a part of Saint Mary's volleyball over the past four years," Kiecker added. "This program has a strong foundation and I want to continue to build on that—and take it to the next level."

In her four years at Saint Mary's, the Cardinals have posted a combined 88-37 record—and four straight appearances in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Playoffs.

Prior to her arrival at Saint Mary's, Kiecker spent two years as an assistant coach at Luther College, where she helped lead the Norse to a second-round showing in the IIAC Tournament in 2012.

As a player, Kiecker was a starter for NCAA Division I University of Mississippi, where she became the first true freshman in Ole Miss history to be selected to the SEC All-Freshman Team. Kiecker suffered a career-ending back injury following that freshman campaign, but remained a part of the program, joining the Rebels' coaching staff as a student assistant for the next three seasons.
