MIAC Athletes of the Week – Jan. 16, 2018

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. -- The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) announced its Athlete of the Week award winners for men's and women's swimming and diving and indoor track and field on Tuesday. Student-athletes from Carleton, Gustavus, Hamline and St. Thomas claimed the Conference's weekly honors for Jan. 9-15, 2018.

The MIAC Athlete of the Week awards are nominated and selected by the Conference's sports information directors. Throughout the winter season, team sports (basketball, hockey) Athletes of the Week will be recognized on Monday afternoons, with individual sports (swimming and diving, indoor track and field) announced on Tuesday afternoons. The winners of the latest Athlete of the Week awards are listed below, along with details on their outstanding performances.

MIAC Men's Swimming & Diving Athlete of the Week

First-year swimmer Andrew Chang won three events and notched a trio of runner-up results for the Knights last weekend. During the dual meet at Gustavus, Chang notched a nearly four-second margin of victory in the 200-yard individual medley with his time of 2:01.19 and posted a season-best time of 52.32 to win the 100-yard butterfly. Less than 24 hours later, he was back in the water to win the 50-yard butterfly with a time of 23.78 at the Luther Sprint Invite.

Gustavus junior Sydney Hallmark won all four events she competed in Saturday in a MIAC dual victory over Carleton. Hallmark won the 1,000 freestyle (11:13.74), 200-yard butterfly (2:18.16) and 500 freestyle (5:26.20) as an individual, and was a member of the first-place 200 freestyle team, touching the wall in 1:40.12.

Taylor Rooney made quite a first impression in his collegiate debut, winning the 60-meter hurdles and tying for third in the high jump at "The Opener" on the campus of the University of St. Thomas last Friday. Rooney's 60-meter hurdle time of 8.36 was two-tenths of a second faster than any MIAC competitor all of last season.

Eric Holst threw 59-5 in the weight throw to secure first-place at "The Opener" on Friday, representing the fifth-best throw in all of Division III this season and a personal record for the Tommie junior, who topped out at 51-4 ¼ last year.

MIAC Women's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week

Hamline sophomore Briana Berninghaus won the 60-meter dash at "The Opener" with a blistering time of 7.92 – the tenth fastest time in all of Division III this season. Berninghaus also placed second in the 200-meters at the meet, clocking in at 26.60.

St. Thomas junior Grace Bordson claimed first place in the high jump to open her 2018 indoor season. Bordson's leap of 5-3 represents the 14th best in all of Division III this year.
