BLOOMINGTON, Minn. -- The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) announced its Athlete of the Week award winners in basketball and hockey on Monday. Student-athletes from Augsburg, Bethel, Carleton and Saint Mary's claimed the Conference's weekly honors for Jan. 22-28, 2018.
The winners of the latest Athlete of the Week awards are listed below, along with details on their award-winning performances.
The MIAC Athlete of the Week awards are nominated and selected each week by the Conference's sports information directors. Throughout the winter season, team sports (basketball, hockey) will be recognized on Monday afternoons, with individual sports (swimming and diving, indoor track and field) announced on Tuesday afternoons.
MIAC Men's Basketball Player of the Week
So. – Forward
St. Paul, Minn. | St. Paul Academy
Limited to just one game last week due to a blizzard, Kent Hanson made the most of his opportunity, leading Carleton to an overtime victory at Augsburg on Wednesday with a career-high 30 points to go along with 13 rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals. Hanson took over down the stretch, accounting for 16 of the Knights' final 21 points in the game, including a game-tying three-point play with 33 seconds left in regulation to send the game to overtime.
MIAC Women's Basketball Player of the Week
Jr. – Center
Duluth, Minn. | Duluth East
Junior center Hannah Johnson averaged 18.0 points and 10.0 rebounds as the Royals went 1-1 in MIAC play last week. Johnson collected her eighth double-double of the season on Saturday, posting 25 points and 15 rebounds in an 83-76 loss to Saint Benedict. She also collected three blocks, two assists and a steal in the game.
MIAC Men's Hockey Athlete of the Week
Saint Mary's University
Sr. – Goalie
Senior goalie Aaron Davis was instrumental in helping the Cardinals to a key sweep of Gustavus last weekend. Davis posted a 31-save shutout in Saint Mary's 1-0 win over the Gusties on Friday and added 24 more saves in the rematch on Saturday.
MIAC Women's Hockey Athlete of the Week
Sr. – Defender
Anchorage, Alaska | Dimond
Augsburg defender Taral Clayton had a career night in the team's 9-1 win over St. Olaf on Saturday, collecting her first collegiate hat trick while adding a pair of assists for a five-point game. The senior entered Saturday's contest with one goal in her career before striking on a power-play late in the first period and adding a pair of scores in the third to secure the hat trick and raise her career point total to 19.
