NORTHFIELD, Minn. – St. Olaf College has added Michael Abdella and Chelsey Schulenburg to its athletic department staff. Abdella has been named Assistant Athletic Director for Strategic Communications while Schulenburg will serve as the Assistant Director for Sports Information and Marketing.
Abdella is a 2013 graduate of St. Olaf who returns to the Hill after most recently working as the Assistant Director of Athletic Communications at Saint Anselm College in Manchester, N.H. At Saint Anselm, he was the primary contact for 11 of the college's 20 NCAA Division II sports (men's and women's soccer, volleyball, men's and women's tennis, men's and women's ice hockey, men's and women's skiing, softball and women's lacrosse).
"We are excited to have someone of Michael's quality join our team," St. Olaf athletic director Ryan Bowles said. "He is extremely dedicated to his craft and an Ole through and through."
Prior to Saint Anselm, Abdella served as a graduate assistant in sports information at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point for two and a half years, assisting with coverage of 20 NCAA Division III teams, including the 2015 national champion men's basketball team. During his time there, UW-Stevens Point was the championship host site for the 2014 NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Championship and he assisted with the media relations for the event.
Schulenburg joins the Ole staff after spending 2017-18 as a graduate assistant at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Her two-year position at St. Olaf will be funded in-part by the NCAA Division III Ethnic Minorities and Women's Internship Grant.
"Chelsey has a demonstrated passion and work ethic in athletic communications and we couldn't be more excited to work with her," senior associate athletic director Mike Ludwig said.
Schulenburg is a 2017 graduate of UW-Whitewater where she served as an athletic communications student worker for two years. She served many roles at UW-Whitewater and was involved with every sport. Schulenburg was responsible for postgame articles, previews of future events, game notes for football, softball and baseball and created the "This Week in Athletics" weekly post. She also coordinated media interviews, ran social media accounts, created graphics and game day programs and recorded in-game stats for various athletic events.
