MIAC Athletes of the Week - 2018-19

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. -- The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) announced its Athlete of the Week award winners for golf and cross country on Tuesday. Student-athletes from Carleton, Saint Benedict, and St. Olaf claimed the Conference's weekly honors for September 11-17, 2018.

The MIAC Athlete of the Week awards are nominated by the Conference's sports information directors and selected by MIAC staff. Throughout the fall season, team sports (football, soccer and volleyball) Athletes of the Week will be recognized on Monday afternoons, with individual sports (cross country and golf) announced on Tuesday afternoons. The winners of the latest Athlete of the Week awards are listed below, along with details on their outstanding performances.

MIAC Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Week
Thomas Lerdall
St. Olaf College

Plymouth, Minn. | Wayzata

Thomas Lerdall finished sixth out of 316 competitors on a hot and humid course in Bloomington, Minn. Saturday at the Auggie Invitational. The senior runner clocked in a 27:17.1 while averaging a 5:29.4 mile in the 8K race. Lerdall's time helped the Oles finish second out of 23 teams at the event.

College of Saint Benedict
Mandan, N.D. | Saint Mary's Central

Morgan Pierce earned her second MIAC Athlete of the Week nod in the last three weeks by placing third out of 308 runners at the Auggie Invitational on Saturday. Pierce fought through hot and humid conditions to cross the finish line in 23:54.4, a time that placed her ahead of all other MIAC competitors and locked down her third top-10 finish in as many races this season.

St. Olaf College
Stavanger, Norway | Wang Videregående Skole

Kristian Leik Woie earned medalist honors at his second straight tournament to help St. Olaf to victory at the Northfield Triangular on Saturday. Leik Woie carded a one-round tournament score of 80 against fellow MIAC competitors from Carleton and Macalester to tie for a first-place finish individually. The senior registered a five-over-par 149 at the Cobber Fall Invitational one week prior to secure individual and team victories.

Ayumi Sakamoto
Carleton College

Honolulu, Hawaii | 'Iolani School

Ayumi Sakamoto finished second overall at the 75-player D3 Classic with a two-over-par total of 146, helping Carleton win its 14th straight regular season tournament. Her weekend began with a two-over 74 before tying for the tournament's best final-round score with an even-par 72. Sakamoto's two-over-par weekend is the fourth-best 36-hole performance in program history.
