MIAC Athletes of the Week - 2018-19

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. -- The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) announced its Athlete of the Week award winners for golf and cross country on Tuesday. Student-athletes from Carleton, Gustavus, and Saint John's claimed the Conference's weekly honors for September 25 - October 1, 2018.

The MIAC Athlete of the Week awards are nominated by the Conference's sports information directors and selected by MIAC staff. Throughout the fall season, team sports (football, soccer and volleyball) Athletes of the Week will be recognized on Monday afternoons, with individual sports (cross country and golf) announced on Tuesday afternoons. The winners of the latest Athlete of the Week awards are listed below, along with details on their outstanding performances.

MIAC Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Week
Lucas Mueller

Lucas Mueller placed second out of 430 runners at the UW-Eau Claire Blugold Invitational, clocking in at 24:41.06, just 1.7 seconds shy of a first-place finish. Mueller passed UWEC alumnus and 2017 NCAA D-III champion Darin Lau in the last few meters of the race to help the Knights fourth out of 24 teams in competition, including three other nationally-ranked teams.

Emma Greenlee finished second out of 327 runners at the UW-Eau Claire Blugold Invitational last weekend. Her 22:09.3 finish helped Carleton place only two points behind host No. 10 UW-Eau Claire for the team title. The 25-team field included three other nationally-ranked squads in No. 17 Wheaton (Ill.), No. 27 North Central (Ill.), and No. 29 St. Olaf.

Max Ullan tied for medalist honors last weekend at the Saint John's Fall Invitational with an even-par score of 144. After being in a tie for 10th after day one, Ullan made a big push by shooting a two-under-par 70 on day two to propel himself to the top of the leaderboard and help the Gusties claim second place at the tournament.

Maple Grove, Minn. | Totino-Grace

Matt Lutz tied for medalist honors with an even-par 144 as the nationally-ranked Johnnies won their Fall Invitational by seven shots over the weekend. The appearance on SJU's varsity was the first for Lutz since the season opener. He had a 77.7 scoring average in the six previous rounds and now leads the team with three rounds at par or better this season.

Ziyi Wang successfully defended her MIAC medalist title by setting a new conference record at the 2018 MIAC Women's Golf Championships at Pebble Creek Golf Club in Becker, Minn. over the weekend. Wang posted scores of 73-74-74 for a three-day 54-hole total of 221 (+5), surpassing the previous MIAC mark - which she tied last year - by three shots.
