MIAC Athletes of the Week - 2018-19

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. -- The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) announced its Athlete of the Week award winners for basketball and hockey on Monday. Student-athletes from Bethel, Hamline, and St. Thomas claimed the Conference's latest weekly honors.

The MIAC Athlete of the Week awards are nominated by the Conference's sports information directors and selected by MIAC staff. Throughout the winter season, team sports (basketball, hockey) Athletes of the Week will be recognized on Monday afternoons, with individual sports (swimming and diving, indoor track and field) announced on Tuesday afternoons. The winners of the latest Athlete of the Week awards are listed below, along with details on their outstanding performances.

MIAC Men's Basketball Athlete of the Week

Connor Bair scored 36 points in 35 minutes of action in a pair of Tommie wins last week. The senior forward played just 17.5 minutes per game in conference victories over Gustavus and Hamline, but made those minutes count, as he shot better than 80 percent in both contests, posting 10 points and three rebounds while going 4-for-5 from the floor against the Gusties on Wednesday before totaling a career-best 26 points on 10-of-12 shooting in a win over the Pipers on Saturday. Bair is tied for sixth in NCAA Division III with a field goal percentage of 69.2 this season.

Hannah Johnson registered double-digit scoring totals four times in the last 10 days to help extend Bethel's winning streak to six games, including five road victories and an upset of the nation's ninth-ranked team. Johnson poured in a game-high 16 points to go along with a career-high 18 rebounds to aid the Royals in topping No. 9-ranked George Fox, 65-64, in Newberg, Ore. last Sunday night. The performance was one of two double-doubles recorded by the senior center last week, as Johnson also posted 14 points and 12 boards in a win over St. Catherine on Saturday. She is one of two MIAC players currently averaging double-digits in both points and rebounds per game this season.

MIAC Men's Hockey Athlete of the Week

Johnny Panvica had a six-point weekend to help St. Thomas sweep home games with Wis.-River Falls and Wis.-Superior. Panvica had two assists in Friday's 4-2 win over the Falcons before recording a goal and three assists in Saturday's 6-2 victory against the Yellowjackets. The junior forward has contributed nine points in the Toms' current three-game win streak. St. Thomas is 29-8-5 in games on his career when Panvica scored a point.

MIAC Women's Hockey Athlete of the Week

Leah Schwartzman had a hand in 10 of the 18 goals Hamline scored in three victories over four days last week. The senior notched one goal and three assists in a 6-2 victory over 12-2-1 Saint Anselm last Thursday before tallying two goals and four assists in a two-game series with St. Norbert over the weekend. Hamline boasts the top five overall scorers in the MIAC this year, with Schwartzman's 10-point weekend vaulting her into a tie with teammate Molly Garin for the third-most points (16) among conference competitors this season.
