MIAC Athletes of the Week - 2018-19

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. -- The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) announced its Athlete of the Week award winners for baseball and softball on Monday. Student-athletes from Saint Mary's and St. Olaf claimed the Conference's honors for Feb. 25 - Mar. 3, 2019.

The MIAC Athlete of the Week awards are nominated by the Conference's sports information directors and selected by MIAC staff. Transitioning into the spring season, team sports (baseball, softball) Athletes of the Week will be recognized on Monday afternoons, with individual sports (tennis, golf, outdoor track and field) announced on Tuesday afternoons. The winners of the latest Athlete of the Week awards are listed below, along with details on their outstanding performances.

MIAC Baseball Player of the Week
Matthew Piechowski

Matthew Piechowski was the Cardinals' offensive leader during their 10-game spring trip to Auburndale, Fla., hitting a team-high .429, while also leading or sharing the team lead in at-bats (35), runs (12), hits (15), triples (1), home runs (1), RBI (12), slugging percentage (.600), and on-base percentage (.524). Piechowski belted his first collegiate home run - a grand slam - in Saint Mary's 11-1 win over Cabrini on Feb. 24 and collected at least one hit in eight of the Cardinals' 10 games, including a season-opening seven-game hitting streak. Piechowski boasted four multiple-hit games, including three-hit efforts against MSOE on Feb. 24 and RPI on March 2.

James Green went 2-0 with a 1.50 ERA in two starts during the Cardinals' 10-game spring trip last week. The sophomore right-hander and 2018 MIAC Rookie of the Year threw six shutout innings and allowed just one hit in his first start against Cabrini last Sunday and then tossed six more innings of shutout ball before Neumann tagged him for three runs in the seventh frame of the Cardinals' 9-3 victory on March 1. Green struck out 16 and walked a total of two batters in the two games combined.

Emily Carr posted slash line of .538/.600/.923 in four games for St. Olaf at the ACM Tournament in Rochester, Minn., as the Oles went 3-1 over the weekend. Five of the senior's seven hits were doubles, as she scored four runs and drove in two more. Carr had three two-hit games over the weekend to raise her batting average nearly 250 points.

MIAC Softball Pitcher of the Week

Julie Graf allowed just one earned run in 18.2 innings of work for St. Olaf, as the Oles went 3-1 at the ACM Tournament in Rochester, Minn. last week. The junior threw a one-hitter with 12 strikeouts in a 5-2 win over Rockford on Sunday after striking out 10 and allowing one hit in 3.2 innings in a 13-5 win over Knox earlier in the day. Graf went 2-1 with a 0.38 ERA and 37 strikeouts in 18.2 innings of work over her four appearances, with her lone loss coming in a 1-0 defeat to No. 16 Luther in a game in which she allowed just one unearned run with 11 strikeouts.
