MIAC Athletes of the Week - 2018-19

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. -- The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) announced its Athlete of the Week award winners for baseball and softball on Monday. Student-athletes from Concordia, Saint Benedict, and Saint John's claimed the Conference's honors for March 4-10, 2019.

The MIAC Athlete of the Week awards are nominated by the Conference's sports information directors and selected by MIAC staff. Transitioning into the spring season, team sports (baseball, softball) Athletes of the Week will be recognized on Monday afternoons, with individual sports (tennis, golf, outdoor track and field) announced on Tuesday afternoons. The winners of the latest Athlete of the Week awards are listed below, along with details on their outstanding performances.

MIAC Baseball Player of the Week
Nate Hoeft

Nate Hoeft led Concordia in batting average and on-base percentage in the team's first eight games in Florida last week. He hit .526 and had an on-base percentage of .625. He was also tied for the team lead with seven runs batted in. Hoeft had a hit in all five of the games in which he had an at-bat and logged three multi-hit games on the week.

Jake Dickmeyer recorded a career-high nine strikeouts while allowing three hits in a complete-game, 6-0 shutout of Otterbein on March 6 in Ft. Myers, Fla. The reigning MIAC Pitcher of the Year retired his first eight batters of the day before an infield single snapped the streak in the third inning. Dickmeyer moved into 10th-place in school history in both innings pitched (157.1) and wins (14-3 career record) in the victory. The senior right-hander threw 109 pitches in SJU's first nine-inning complete-game shutout in three seasons.

Kate Deming totaled 16 hits and a .444 batting average as Saint Benedict went 7-3 last week in Florida. The senior outfielder had six multi-hit games, including a 4-for-4 outing in a 9-3 win against Hood, during which she hit a three-run triple to help CSB break a 3-3 tie and pull away for the win. Deming also had two RBI in a win against Simmons, finishing the week with three doubles, three triples, and eight RBI with a 4-for-4 mark on stolen base attempts.

Megan Gavin went 6-1 and was responsible for all six Concordia wins in Florida, with four of those victories coming in the last week. The six total wins are the most for a Cobber team on a spring break trip since 1999 and four more than Gavin had all of last season. Gavin pitched in nine of the team's 10 games and never allowed more than two earned runs in an outing. She also allowed fewer than two runs in six of her nine appearances, striking out 60 batters in 45 innings on the trip.
