Minneapolis, Minn. / Southwest
Augsburg hadn't beaten Saint John's in back-to-back seasons since 1927-29. Well, they hadn't until Saturday, that is. Behind another stellar performance from QB Ayrton Scott (Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest), the Auggies scored a 48-17 win over the Johnnies, with more than 400 yards of total offense and four touchdown passes coming from the dual-threat freshman signal caller. For his big performance, Scott was named the MIAC Football Offensive Player-of-the-Week for the third time in a four-week span.
Scott was his usual dynamic self both on the ground and through the air, as he ran 25 times for 143 yards (5.7 average) and he was 18-for-27 in the passing game for 259 yards and four TDs with two interceptions. Scott's head-turning numbers in his rookie campaign are among the best in the nation and the conference. He lead the MIAC in rushing yards per game (150.2), touchdown passes (17) and total offense (1,831 yards), and he ranks second in Division III in total offense and seventh in rushing yards per game.
With Saturday's big win, Augsburg improved to 4-1 overall and 3-1 in the MIAC, with only a 1-point loss to No. 7 Bethel standing between the Auggies and an unbeaten first half of the season. Augsburg, which appeared in the "Others receiving votes" section of the AFCA Coaches Poll, faces another tough game this weekend, with a trip to Northfield to face St. Olaf Saturday at 1 p.m. The Oles are 5-1 overall and 3-1 in the MIAC, tied with Augsburg in second place.
