Augsburg falls in OT in NCAA quarterfinals

ASHWAUBENON, Wis. -- The Augsburg College men's hockey team took defending national runner-up St. Norbert College to overtime, but the Green Knights scored with 6:06 left in overtime to claim a 4-3 victory in an NCAA Division III national quarterfinal game on Saturday evening.

• Corbin Chapman (SR, Burnsville, Minn.) figured in the scoring in all three Augsburg goals, scoring twice with an assist, including a game-tying power-play goal from Luke Dietsch (SO, St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) with 5:27 left in the third period.
• Chapman opened the scoring with a goal from Nate Flynn (JR, Hastings, Minn.) and Dietsch 8:03 into the game, and assisted on a goal by Trevor Stewart (SR, Highlands Ranch, Colo./Eastmont HS) at the 11:14 mark of the second period.
• The teams exchanged goals in the first two periods, with the Green Knights tying the game at 2-2 with 3.6 seconds left in the second frame. St. Norbert took a lead at the 11:55 mark of the third period, but the Auggies tied the game on Chapman's power-play goal 2:38 later.
• Augsburg outshot St. Norbert by a 34-26 margin in the game, including a 14-6 advantage in the first period. St. Norbert outshot Augsburg by a 7-4 margin in overtime.
• Nick Schmit (SO, Fargo, N.D./Fargo North HS), who started all three postseason games for the Auggies, collected 22 saves in goal.

• The game marked the conclusion of the collegiate careers of six Augsburg seniors -- Chapman, Stewart, Jordyn Kaufer (SR, Stillwater, Minn.), Dylan Meier (SR, Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista HS), Chris Nuth (SR, Trabuco Canyon, Calif./Mission Viejo HS) and Rory Vesel (SR, Rochester, Minn./Lourdes HS). Together, the group claimed a 59-37-11 (.590 winning percentage) record in their four years, including a 35-19-10 (.625) Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference record, three straight appearances in the MIAC postseason playoffs, two MIAC playoff championships and the 2015-16 MIAC regular-season title.
• Augsburg was competing in its fourth NCAA Division III national tournament, previously competing in 1983-84 (fourth place), 1997-98 (fourth place) and last season.

• Roman Uchyn scored the game-winning goal at the 13:54 mark of overtime, assisted by Pijus Rulevicius and Brad Pung.
• Luke Karakas, Rulevicius and Steven Phillips scored goals in regulation for the Green Knights.
• T.J. Black had 31 saves in goal for St. Norbert.
