BLAINE, Minn. – The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) continued its annual Men's Hockey Showcase at Schwan Super Rink in Blaine, Minn. on Saturday. Three more MIAC teams dropped the puck to begin their 2018-19 campaigns on the second day of the event.
ST. THOMAS 5, BETHEL 4 | Box Score |
Nine different players scored goals - including five in the first period - as St. Thomas (2-0-0) outlasted Bethel (0-1-0), 5-4, in an action-packed battle to begin the second night of the MIAC Men's Hockey Showcase. Bethel jumped out to an early 2-0 advantage with scores by Josiah Roen and Tyler Mros less than five minutes into the contest. Jake Ahlgren got the Tommies on the board midway through the first, and after an unassisted Nick Eytcheson goal at the 12:39 mark, UST went on a run, roaring back with four straight goals over the next 25 minutes of action. A power-play goal by Brandon Baker brought the Royals back to within one score late in third but St. Thomas managed to hang on for its second win in as many nights.
CONCORDIA 4, SAINT MARY'S 3 (OT) | Box Score |
Mario Bianchi played a role in three of the Concordia's (1-0-0) four goals to lead the Cobbers to a 4-3 overtime victory over Saint Mary's (0-2-0). After Saint Mary's defenseman Kyle Meeh got the Cardinals on the board first with an assisted goal just under 10 minutes into the first period, Bianchi answered with a goal of his own to send the teams to break with a 1-1 tie. The two squads traded scores in the second and third periods before Bianchi snuck one past Al Rogers just over three minutes into the overtime period.
AUGSBURG 5, HAMLINE 3 | Box Score |
For the second night in a row, Augsburg forward Alex Rodriguez was an offensive juggernaut, posting his second consecutive hat trick to lead the Auggies (2-0-0) to a 5-3 victory over Hamline (0-1-0). The Pipers ended the first period with a 1-0 advantage, thanks to a Tommy Hall goal at the 12-minute mark. Rodriguez scored the next two to put the Auggies on top, but Mitch McPherson and Weiland Parrish answered right back, scoring goals less than 30 seconds apart to give Hamline a brief lead before Austin Dollimer knotted the score at 3-3 heading into the final frame. An Eric Brenk score 87 seconds into the third period proved to be the game-winner for the Auggies.
