BLOOMINGTON, Minn. - Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) men's hockey teams returned to the ice over the weekend. Augsburg used a pair of conference victories to vault back into sole possession of the MIAC lead, while Concordia and Saint John's remain hot on the Auggies' heels. Ten non-conference contests are on tap this weekend before full league play gets underway again next Friday night.

NATIONAL NOTABLES
Augsburg forward Alex Rodriguez (Miami, Fla. | Shattuck-St. Mary's) ranks No. 4 in Division III with an average of 0.93 goals per game this season.

Augsburg goalie Nick Schmit (Fargo, N.D. | North) and St. Thomas goalie Cam Burggrabe (Marquette, Mich.) are tied for third in Division III with goalie winning percentages of .900 this season.

Concordia center Aaron Herdt (Moorhead, Minn.) is tied for the lead in all of collegiate hockey with five game-winning goals this year. Teammate Tyler Bossert (Moorhead, Minn. | Fargo Shanley) is averaging 1.40 assists per game - third-most in Division III - and 1.87 points per game - fourth-best in D-III, while Cobber goalie Jacob Stephan (Eagle River, Wis. | Northland Pines) ranks third in the country in save percentage with a clip of 0.947.

St. Thomas junior Johnny Panvica (Bloomington, Minn. | Jefferson) was named to D3hockey.com's Team of the Week for his play in a pair of non-conference victories last weekend. Panvica scored one goal and assisted on five more in wins over Wis.-River Falls and Wis.-Superior.

AROUND THE MIAC
Augsburg forward Tommy Carey (Moorhead, Minn.) scored two power-play goals against Hamline on Friday night, then assisted on four of Augsburg's seven goals in a 7-2 home triumph over the Pipers on Saturday. On the season, Carey has five goals and a team-best 13 assists for 18 points. He is one of four Auggies among the top seven players in the MIAC in total points, in a tie for sixth with 18. He also leads the MIAC in power-play points with nine (four goals, five assists).

Bethel forward Jay Paul (Minnetonka, Minn.) scored his first goal of the season on Friday against Saint John's. His goal was the Royals' only score of the series.

Concordia opened the new year with a pair of non-conference losses to nationally-ranked foes in Wis.-Stevens Point and Wis.-Eau Claire last weekend. Sophomore forward Matt Donnelly (Denver, Colo. | Culver Military Academy) scored his first collegiate goal in the second minute of the second period to give the Cobbers a 2-1 lead over the No. 1-ranked Pointers on Friday.

Gustavus suffered back-to-back 1-0 non-conference losses to Wis.-Eau Claire and Wis.-River Falls last week. Goalies Chris Amsden (St. Peter, Minn.) and Robbie Goor (Anoka, Minn.) each finished with 30-plus saves.

Hamline sophomore forward Taylor Trapp (West Salem, Wis.) assisted on goals in both games against nationally-ranked Augsburg over the weekend. Trapp has three goals and three assists on the season.

Saint John's goalie Andrew Lindgren (Minneapolis, Minn.) went 2-0 as SJU snapped a five-game winless streak with a sweep of Bethel over the weekend. He posted a 0.50 goals-allowed average and a .973 save percentage (36 saves), including a 26-save shutout last Saturday night, his second of the season and third of his career. Lindgren made seven saves during a four-minute penalty kill late in Saturday's win. Two of those minutes were a 5-on-3.

Saint Mary's has not played since a 4-2 victory over Wis.-Superior on December 8. The Cardinals return to the ice this weekend at home against Concordia.

Junior defender Roshen Jaswal (Burnaby, B.C.) scored the first St. Olaf goal in the team's new home rink as part of a two-score performance in a 4-2 loss to Wis.-Stout last Friday night. It was the first two-goal outing of Jaswal's career.

St. Thomas forward Johnny Panvica (Bloomington, Minn. | Jefferson) had a six-point weekend to help UST sweep home games with Wis.-River Falls and Wis.-Superior. Panvica had two assists in Friday's 4-2 win over the Falcons before recording a goal and three assists in Saturday's 6-2 victory against the Yellowjackets. The junior forward has contributed nine points in the Toms' current three-game win streak. St. Thomas is 29-8-5 in games on his career when Panvica scored a point.
