BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) kicked off its 2018 Men's Soccer Playoffs with a pair of quarterfinal matchups on Tuesday. No. 3 Macalester defeated No. 6 Hamline by a margin of 3-1 at home, while No. 5 Augsburg pulled off a dramatic road upset of No. 4 St. Thomas, defeating the defending MIAC Playoff champs on penalty kicks after two scoreless periods of regulation and a pair of shutout overtimes.
The Scots and Auggies will join No. 1 Gustavus and No. 2 Carleton in the semifinals on Wednesday.

Macalester scored less than 13 minutes into the game and never looked back, defeating No. 6 Hamline, 3-1, to advance to the semifinal round of the MIAC Playoffs. Omar Anwar registered the first goal of the game at the 12:58 mark to give the Scots a 1-0 advantage. It would stay that way until Jamel Benhamadia connected on a penalty kick less than a minute into the second half. Jack Reddan provided the lone goal for the Pipers when he drilled a free kick past Macalester goalkeeper Colton Wenig with a little over 10 minutes to play. Macalester will move on to face No. 2 seed Carleton tomorrow. The two teams battled to a 1-1 tie in their regular season matchup on September 22. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. in Northfield.

After two scoreless periods of regulation and a pair of shutout overtimes, Augsburg goalkeeper Garrett Kaelin deflected the last three Tommie shootout attempts to secure the Auggies' advancement in the MIAC Playoffs. The Augsburg advancement ensured the MIAC will have a new Playoff champion in 2018. Christian Metzger's successful penalty kick in the Auggies' fourth attempt proved to be the difference in the game. St. Thomas goalkeeper Aidan Hogan made two saves in 110 minutes in goal, recording his 30th career shutout in his 62nd career game. Augsburg advances on to face regular season MIAC champion Gustavus on Wednesday afternoon in St. Peter. The Gusties topped the Auggies, 1-0, to close out September. Kickoff for the postseason rematch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
SEMIFINAL MATCHUPS SET FOR WEDNESDAY
The Scots and Auggies used their quarterfinal wins to advance to Wednesday's semifinals, where No. 1 Gustavus and No. 2 Carleton are waiting. The Gusties will host No. 5 Augsburg, while No. 3 Macalester will travel to No. 2 Carleton. Both matchups are tentatively set for 2:00 p.m.
Wednesday's two semifinal winners will meet on Saturday, Nov. 3, in the 2018 MIAC Men's Soccer Playoff championship game. The game is tentaviely scheduled for 1 p.m. The MIAC Playoff Champion will receive the postseason championship plaque and the Conference's automatic bid to the 2018 NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Tournament.
