BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Men's Soccer Playoffs continued on Wednesday with a pair of semifinal matchups. No. 2 Carleton and No. 5 Augsburg both advanced to the Playoff Championship, each recording 1-0 victories. The Knights will host the Auggies in the MIAC Playoff Championship Game at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.
The Knights and Auggies have met in the MIAC Playoffs twice before, most recently in 2010 when Augsburg topped Carleton, 1-0, in the semifinals en route to a Playoff Championship. The two teams also faced off in the 2008 Playoff Championship, which saw a 0-0 tie go to Carleton on penalty kicks. In the 2018 regular season, Carleton and Augsburg also battled to a scoreless draw.
NO. 2 CARLETON 1, NO. 3 MACALESTER 0 | Box Score |
No. 2 seeded Carleton advanced to the sixth MIAC Playoff championship game in program history with a 1-0 victory over No. 3 Macalester on Wednesday. Midfielder Brennan Johnson scored off a free kick and header just under 40 minutes into the match to put the Knights on the board. Adam Pearson and Henry Koelling were credited with assists on the play. Carleton's defense was impeccable, keeping the Scots out of scoring position all afternoon and allowing just one shot on goal in the match. Colton Wenig stopped five of the six shots directed at him over 60 minutes in the Macalester goal. With the win, the Knights are headed back to the MIAC Championship game for the first time since 2013. Carleton won Playoff titles in 2008 and 2013, and was the MIAC runner-up in 2009, 2011, and 2012.
NO. 5 AUGSBURG 1, NO. 1 GUSTAVUS 0 | Box Score |
One day after upsetting the reigning MIAC Playoff champs on penalty kicks, Augsburg pulled off another road playoff win, this time taking down the regular season MIAC champions and top seed in the tournament, Gustavus Adolphus College, 1-0. Daniel Hedstrom scored his seventh goal of the season by booting in a Christian Metzger free kick at 36:59 in the match. It was Augsburg's only shot on goal of the afternoon, but proved to be all the offense the Auggies needed. Garrett Kaelin posted his second straight shutout of the postseason, recording four saves for the Auggies during his 90 minutes between the pipes. With the win, Augsburg advances back to the Playoff Championship for the first time since 2010. That appearance represents the Auggies' only previous Playoff title. Augsburg's only other championship match came in 2008 against Carleton, when the Knights edged the Auggies 5-3 on penalty kicks after battling to a 0-0 draw in regulation and overtime.
