NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Carleton is headed to the 2018 NCAA Men's Soccer Tournament after outshooting Augsburg 4-3 on penalty kicks in the 2018 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Men's Soccer Playoff Championship game that came down to a shootout in Northfield on Saturday.
| Box Score |
Carleton and Augsburg each scored a goal in the first half of a highly-competitive game and the score stayed knotted 1-1 through the second half and two overtime periods before the game was settled in the shootout.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Carleton got on the board early with an "own-goal" score at 3:36 in the first, but Augsburg evened things out at 1-1 with a Daniel Hedstrom header into the right corner off a free kick from teammate Peyton Boich. The goal was Hedstrom's eighth of the season.
-Though goalkeeper Aaron Foreman made four saves in 110 minutes of action, Carleton elected to send defender Bryan Kim out for the shootout. The surprise move paid off, as Kim stopped a pair of Auggie penalty kicks to help secure the victory. The Knights went 4-for-5 in the shootout, successfully converting on the team's last four attempts.
-Augsburg keeper Garrett Kaelin was masterful in-goal once again for the Auggies, setting a new career-high with 12 saves in the game. It was the second time this season Kaelin made double-digit stops.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
-With the win, Carleton extended its unbeaten streak to 15 consecutive games. The Knights have yielded just nine total goals during that span.
-The Playoff Championship is the third all-time for the Knights, who also won MIAC Championships in 2008 and 2013.
-This is the first MIAC Men's Soccer Championship to be decided in a shootout since 2012 when Gustavus edged Carleton 7-6 on penalty kicks following a 0-0 tie. This is the third time in MIAC Playoff history that the Championship game has been decided on penalty kicks. Carleton has played in all three of those games, as the Knights defeated Augsburg on penalty kicks (5-3) in 2008, fell to Gustavus (7-6) in 2012, and defeated Augsburg (4-3) in 2018.
-Carleton received the MIAC Playoff championship plaque and the Conference's automatic bid to the 2018 NCAA Men's Soccer Tournament. Augsburg and the rest of the MIAC will eagerly await Selection Monday to see if the League sends any additional teams to the Tournament via at-large bids. The NCAA will announce the national tournament field during its annual selection show on NCAA.com Monday, Nov. 5 at 12:00 p.m. CST.
