St. Thomas junior Nick Johnson (Blaine, Minn.) had a great warm-up for the 2013 MIAC Swimming and Diving Championships at the site of the MIAC meet over the weekend, putting up great diving scores against talented Division I and II competition at the Minnesota Challenge diving meet Saturday at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center. Johnson finished third on the 1-meter board and ninth on the 3-meter board against the loaded field, and was named the MIAC Men's Swimming and Diving Athlete-of-the-Week.
Johnson finished with a total of 260.30 points to finish third on the 1-meter diving board, and had nearly the same score - 260.00 - to also earn a top-10 finish on the 3-meter board. Johnson was the top Division III diver in both events, and beat numerous competitors from both Division I and II. His 3-meter score was just five points behind the fifth diver from the host Gophers, and his scores neared the NCAA qualifying standards. Johnson holds the top score on both boards in the MIAC this season - 291.15 on the 1-meter and 328.40 on the 3-meter.
The Tommies hope Johnson repeats his strong showing at the U of M again this week, as they'll try to defend their team championships at the 2013 MIAC Swimming and Diving Championships. The conference meet will feature six sessions - two each on Thursday, Friday and Saturday - with preliminary heats in the morning and championship heats at each evening session. All six sessions will be broadcast live online on the MIAC web site along with results, recaps and photos.
