The St. Thomas men's swimming and diving team repeated as champions at Macalester's Roger Ahlman Invitational Saturday, finishing first out of four teams. The Tommie men had 15 first-place event finishes, led by diver Nick Johnson (Blaine, Minn.), who swept the diving title on both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards. Johnson's 3-meter dive bettered the regional qualifying standard, and ranks first in the MIAC this season. For his performance, Johnson was named the MIAC Men's Swimming and Diving Athlete-of-the-Week.
Johnson won the 1-meter title at Macalester with a score of 255.95, and his winning score on the 3-meter board was 295.30. The 3-meter score was more than 10 points better than the NCAA Division III regional qualifying standard, and his two wins helped UST defeat Saint Mary's Hamline, Macalester and St. Olaf in the team standings. St. Thomas' team score was 744, with the host school in second at 283.5, and both of Johnson's decisive diving victories came by more than 30-point margins. Johnson's score of 295.30 on the 3-meter board is the best mark in the MIAC this season.
Johnson and his teammates will take some time off before returning to action in their home pool. The Tommies will host the St. Thomas Invite - a two-day competition - on Dec. 7-8, before wrapping up the 2012 portion of their schedule at Saint John's on Dec. 15. Following the holiday break, St. Thomas will return to action on Jan. 19 when it hosts the Meet of Saints.
