Maple Grove, Minn. / Maple Grove
It's hard to imagine a swimmer having a better weekend than the one St. Thomas' Mike Lanz (Maple Grove, Minn.) just enjoyed. Lanz led the Tommies to victory in the six-team field at their home St. Thomas Invite by winning three individual events and contributing to a trio of relay wins as well. In the process, the talented freshman set one school record, three pool records and six meet records. For his historic performance, Lanz was named the MIAC Men's Swimming and Diving Athlete-of-the-Week.
Lanz set a new St. Thomas record, as well as the new pool and meet best, in winning the 200-yard butterfly in 1:52.75. That time was more than a full second under the NCAA's 'B' Qualifying Standard. His wins in the 100-yard butterfly (50.62) and 200-yard individual medley (1:58.80) were new pool and meet records, and he helped St. Thomas finish first and set new meet records in the 800-yard freestyle relay, 400-yard medley relay and 400-yard freestyle relay. Lanz currently holds the second-fastest time in the conference in the 100 fly and 200 fly and his 200-IM time ranks third in the MIAC. He's also third in the 200 free and fourth in the 100 free.
St. Thomas will be back in action Saturday when they host rival Saint John's for a dual meet in their home pool. The Tommie-Johnnie swimming showdown is schedule for a 1 p.m. start on Dec. 15. Following that competition, Lanz and his teammates will enjoy more than a month off for semester break and the holiday season. UST returns to action at the Meet of Saints at home on Jan. 19.
