The St. Thomas men's swimming and diving team scored a big dual meet victory over Gustavus over the weekend, after the Gusties had surged out to an early advantage. However, three huge wins - two individual events and one relay - by senior Sam Rauchwarter (Eagan, Minn./Eastview) gave the Tommies the momentum they needed to complete the comeback and score the big win. For his first-place performances, Rauchwarter was named the MIAC Men's Swimming and Diving Athlete-of-the-Week.
After the Gusties had won the medley relay and claimed four of the top five spots in the 1,000-yard freestyle, St. Thomas was in need of a boost and Rauchwarter - fresh off a bout with the flu - was ready to deliver. He won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:45.31, then added a win in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 48.13. He also helped the 200-yard freestyle relay score a crucial victory with a winning time of 21.90. This season, Rauchwarter ranks in the top six in the MIAC in both the 100 and 200.
Rauchwarter and his teammates have one more chance to tune-up prior to their title defense at the 2013 MIAC Swimming and Diving Championships, which will be held Feb. 14-16 at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center in Minneapolis. St. Thomas will host the Conference Invitational in its home pool this weekend with Friday's action starting at 6 p.m. and Saturday's portion beginning at noon. The Tommies will also send its divers to the Minnesota Challenge at the U of M on Feb. 9.
