Saint John's swimming and diving fans are quickly learning that first-year standout Jose Alvarez (North Bay Village, Fla./Belen Jesuit). Alvarez dazzled once again Saturday, showing off his versatility and talent with first-place finishes in three different events at the Gustavus Mini-Invitational. Alvarez' trio of victories helped the Johnnies finished second in the three-team event. For his performance, Alvarez was named the MIAC Men's Swimming and Diving Athlete-of-the-Week for the second time this season.
Alvarez finished first in the 200-yard individual medley, the 200-yard butterfly and the 200-yard backstroke. He shaved two seconds off his time in the 200-IM from the Nov. 9 season opener and won Saturday with a time of 1:59.42. he finished the 200-fly in 1:59.96 and swam a 2:01.17 to win the 200-back. So far this season, Alvarez ranks second in the MIAC in the 200-IM as well as the 100- and 200-back, third in the 200-fly, sixth in the 100-fly.
Saturday, the Johnnies amassed 1,076 points to finish behind the host Gusties (1,209) but ahead of third-place Morningside (524). Alvarez and his teammates will take the rest of November off before returning to action next month. Saint John's will swim in the Jean Freeman Invitational at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center in Minneapolis, Minn., on Dec. 6-7 before hosting rival St. Thomas in a dual on Dec. 14.
