Edina, Minn. / Hopkins
The St. Olaf men's swimming and diving team had a great weekend against top-notch competition at the 2013 Jane Freeman Invitational, hosted by the University of Minnesota. It was a breakout weekend for St. Olaf's Nick Wilkerson (Edina, Minn./Hopkins). The first-year Ole swimmer won one event, finished second in another and added a third top-five finish while hitting a pair of NCAA 'B' Qualifying Standards. For his performance, Wilkerson was named the MIAC Men's Swimming and Diving Athlete-of-the-Week.
Wilkerson won the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:03.20, and added a runner-up finish in the 100-yard breaststroke in 56.77, with both times meeting the NCAA's 'B' cut. Wilkerson also added a fifth-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:56.21 in a meet that included numerous MIAC schools and Division I Minnesota and South Dakota State. Wilkerson's 200-breast time ranks first in the MIAC this season, his 100-breast time ranks second and his 200-IM time is third.
The Oles - who are the defending MIAC champions - will now take more than three weeks off for finals and the holiday break. St. Olaf returns to action on the final day of 2013, as they'll compete at the Ed Kennedy Classic in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., on Dec. 31. The Oles will open the 2014 portion of their schedule on Jan. 11 when they host Macalester and Augsburg in a triangular meet.
