Centennial, Colo. / Smoky Hill
The Gustavus men's swimming and diving team fared well against a talented field last weekend in Iowa as the Gusties finished second in the Grinnell College Invitational. Zac Solis (Centennial, Colo./Smoky Hill) continued his tremendous senior season by scoring a team-high 82 points behind two individual event wins, one relay victory and three other top-seven finishes. For his performance, the MIAC sports information directors honored Solis Tuesday with his second MIAC Men's Swimming and Diving Athlete-of-the-Week award of the season.
Solis was a busy man at Grinnell, competing in four individual events and two relays. He took home titles in the 500-yard freestyle (4:47.63) and 200-yard freestyle (1:46.01) and he helped the Gustavus 400-yard freestyle relay team also finish first with a time of 3:13.73. Solis also finished fifth in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:17.73), seventh in the 200-yard backstroke (2:04.37) and helped the 800-yard freestyle relay team take fourth place (7:32.54) en route to a second-place team finish. Solis currently holds the MIAC's top time this season in three freestyle events (500, 1,000, 1,650) and ranks fourth in the conference in another (200).
The clock is ticking on the Gustavus regular season for Solis and his teammates, as they have just two more opportunities to prepare for the MIAC Championships. Gustavus will host conference rival St. Thomas Saturday for a 1 p.m. dual in St. Peter, then the Gusties will wrap up the regular season on Feb. 6-7 at the two-day Minnesota Challenge in Minneapolis, Minn.
