Park Ridge, Ill. / Park Ridge
St. Thomas diver Andrew Grabowski (Park Ridge, Ill.) has made quite the splash - or lack thereof, actually - in the early-going of his first collegiate season. In a pair of dual meets against MIAC foes Carleton and St. Olaf last weekend, Grabowski scored three first-place finishes and a second on the diving boards, broke one school record and made on NCAA cut in the process. For his performance, the MIAC sports information directors honored Grabowski Tuesday with the MIAC Swimming and Diving Athlete-of-the-Week award.
The rookie diver's big weekend began with a pair of first-place finishes in UST's 142-118 win over Carleton. He scored 252.75 to win the 1-meter title, and 245.00 to also claim victory on the 3-meter board. The following day, he broke the St. Thomas six-dive school record on the 1-meter board and met the first NCAA qualifying cut off with a winning score of 301.25, and his score of 234.15 was good for a second-place finish on the 3-meter board. The Tommies narrowly lost to defending MIAC champion St. Olaf, 153-138.
The Tommies and Grabowski will be back in the pool Saturday with a short trip across town to compete in the Macalester Ahlman Invite. The meet will begin in St. Paul at 1 p.m. After that, UST will compete in the U of M Freeman Invite Dec. 5-6 to wrap up the 2014 portion of the schedule, and the team will finish the calendar year with a training trip to West Palm Beach, Fla.
