The University of St. Thomas men's tennis team continued its terrific spring with a convincing win over a conference foe. The Tommies scored an 8-1 win over Saint Mary's Saturday at the University of Minnesota Baseline Tennis Center with senior Mitchell Blackey (Edina, Minn.) leading the way. Blackey was victorious in impressive fashion in both singles and doubles play to help UST remain undefeated this spring. For his performance, Blackey was named the MIAC Men's Tennis Athlete-of-the-Week.
Blackey teamed up with fellow Tommie Brian McCarthy in UST's No. 1 doubles slot, and faced a tough test against the Cardinals top doubles team. However, the Tommies pulled out a hard-fought 8-4 win as part of a sweep in the three doubles matches. Then, Blackey delivered a great straight-sets win at No. 3 singles, scoring a 6-2 win in the first and a narrow 7-5 win in the second. This spring, Blackey is a perfect 5-0 at No. 1 doubles and 4-1 while splitting his time between No. 2 and No. 3 singles.
Thanks to Saturday's win, St. Thomas remained perfect in 2013 with a 5-0 overall record and a 3-0 conference mark. The Tommies are one of three teams with a zero in the loss column in MIAC play along with Gustavus (10-3, 4-0 MIAC) and Carleton (7-1, 3-0 MIAC). UST will take its unbeaten record on the road for a spring break trip to Hilton Head, S.C., where it will play four matches from March 24-27.
