St. Thomas' men's tennis team had a busy weekend, scoring a pair of MIAC victories in a 36-hour period, and freshman Grant Johnson (Andover, Minn.) played beyond his years to help the Tommies secure both victories. The UST rookie won all four of his matches against Concordia and Saint John's, with the two wins against the Johnnies crucial to the team victory. For his performance, Johnson was named the MIAC Men's Tennis Athlete-of-the-Week.
Johnson cruised to a pair of straight-sets wins in Saturday's 9-0 victory over Concordia. He was a 6-3, 6-2, winner at No. 4 singles and added an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles. The following day, Johnson helped UST pick up its only doubles win against SJU with a dramatic 8-6 victory at the No. 3 slot. He then battled back to take the final two sets and the win at No. 5 singles, by the scores 4-6, 6-1, 10-7, as St. Thomas defeated the Johnnies 6-3. This season, Johnson is a perfect 3-0 in singles play, and he's nearly back to .500 in doubles play at 3-4.
Thanks to the two wins, St. Thomas improved to 5-2 overall, and 4-1 in conference play. The Tommies are in second place, behind only unbeatens Gustavus and Carleton. Johnson and his teammates will try to build on their three-match winning streak with a trip south to Hilton Head, S.C. Starting Sunday, UST will play three matches in five days on their spring trip.
