Mauricio Gonzalez, Carleton

La Paz, Bolivia / American Cooperative School

The Carleton men's tennis team stepped up a level in competition last week to take on Division II St. Cloud State. The Knights came up just short in a hard-fought 6-3 match, but senior Mauricio Gonzalez (La Paz, Bolivia/American Cooperative School) rose to the occasion with an impressive victory in his singles match. For his performance, the MIAC sports information directors honored Gonzalez Tuesday with the MIAC Men's Tennis Athlete-of-the-Week award.

The loss snapped Carleton's impressive 16-match winning streak to open the season, but the Knights became the first MIAC team to score a point - actually, three - against the Huskies this season. One of those points was Gonzalez's dramatic win at No. 4 singles. He dropped the first set 4-6, but battled back to earn a 6-3 win in the second and a thrilling 10-8 third set to take the match. With the win, Gonzalez improved to 8-2 in singles play, and he has a 7-4 doubles record in 2015.

Carleton's record got its first blemish of the season against SCSU, as the team is now 16-1 overall and still perfect at 3-0 in MIAC play. Only the Knights and defending-champion Gustavus still have a zero in the MIAC loss column. Gonzalez and company will try to bounce back from the loss with another nonconference match on Sunday, when Carleton will host Luther at 1 p.m.
