Carleton duo headlines 2017 MIAC Men's Tennis Awards

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. -- The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) announced the 2017 MIAC Men's Tennis Awards Thursday, including the All-Conference teams, All-MIAC Sportsmanship team, with Carleton sweeping the top two individual honors.

The 2017 Arthur Ashe Award was given to Carleton senior Patton McClelland (Rock Hill, S.C. / Charlotte Latin). The award annually recognizes a senior tennis student-athlete with outstanding sportsmanship and exemplary athletic, academic and humanitarian accomplishments.

McClelland is involved with the Green Dot initiative at Carleton serving as on of the leaders of a student run initiative to reduce sexual harassment on campus. He has also been volunteering at Northfield Hospital for three years and has also organized the pre-medical volunteer group on Carleton's campus.

"Being a part of the tennis team afforded me opportunities that shaped my character and livelihood in ways that I never imagined possible," said McClelland. "In addition to instilling the values of leadership, teamwork, work ethic, and responsibility in me, being a member of the Knights tennis team afforded me discipline. Tennis has made me the man I am today, and will continue to shape the way I view the world and myself."

While McClelland's selection as the Ashe Award winner was greatly influenced by his outstanding off-the-court resume', he also played a big role in the Knight's success on the court as well.Patton McClelland is a fourth year starter for the Knight's men's tennis team. He is a three-time all-conference player in singles with his current 5-1 conference record on track for a fourth all-conference award. He currently shares the Carleton record for most career singles victories (63) and still has the post season to break the record.

Stephan Zweifel was also honored by his peers as the MIAC Steve Wilkinson Men's Tennis Coach-of-the-Year as a result of his team's successful season. He has received this award for the sixth time in his 19 years of coaching. Zweifel guided the Knights to 8-1 MIAC record and a 14-3 overall record for the 2016-2017 season. Carleton received the other first-place vote and 70 points to finish second in the poll, and once again the Knights are expected to be Gustavus' top contender in the MIAC playoffs.

The 2017 MIAC Men's Tennis All-Conference Singles and Doubles teams were also recognized. The All-Conference team is selected based on performance during conference dual matches, with the top 18 players (including ties) recognized for both singles and doubles. A player must play in five conferences matches at any position to be eligible for the honor.

As part of a conference-wide sportsmanship initiative, the MIAC announced the 11th annual All-MIAC Sportsmanship team for men's tennis. Members of the All-MIAC Sportsmanship team are selected by their coaches and teammates as individuals who demonstrate ideals of positive sportsmanship both on and off the field of competition.
