BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) announced the 2019 MIAC Men's Tennis Awards on Wednesday, including the Arthur Ashe Award, Coach of the Year, All-Conference and honorable mention teams and All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team.

Bethel senior Hunter Fernelius was selected as the 2019 MIAC Arthur Ashe Award winner. The award annually recognizes a senior men's tennis student-athlete who exhibits outstanding sportsmanship and exemplary athletic, academic and humanitarian accomplishments.

Fernelius (Sr. | New Hope, Minn. | Armstrong) leaves Bethel as the most accomplished men's tennis player in program history, recording more singles and doubles victories than any Royal ever. On the court, Fernelius registered more than 140 wins while earning four All-Conference nods as a singles competitor and two more All-MIAC honors in doubles play. Off the court, he is set to graduate with a double-major in Business Marketing and Human Resource Management after making multiple appearances on the BU Dean's List during his time in Arden Hills.

"Hunter earned the respect of his teammates through working incredibly hard and the results showed on the court," Bethel coach Drew Fernelius said. "Watching Hunter develop as a player and a person over the past four years has been one of the greatest gifts that I have ever been given."

In addition to the Arthur Ashe Award, MIAC tennis coaches also selected the MIAC Steve Wilkinson Men's Tennis Coach of the Year. Saint John's University head coach Jack Bowe was honored by his peers for the third time in his career. Bowe guided the Johnnies to a 7-1 record at home and a 6-3 mark in conference play, clinching SJU's fifth straight MIAC Playoff berth. Bowe was previously honored with Coach of the Year accolades in 1993 and 2003.

The 2019 MIAC Men's Tennis All-Conference Singles and Doubles teams were also recognized. The All-Conference team is selected based on performance during conference dual matches, with the top 18 players (including ties) recognized for both singles and doubles. A player must play in five conferences matches at any position to be eligible for the honor. For the first time ever, coaches also voted on an honorable mention team.

As part of a conference-wide sportsmanship initiative, the MIAC announced the 13th annual All-MIAC Sportsmanship team for men's tennis. Members of the All-MIAC Sportsmanship team are selected by their coaches and teammates as individuals who demonstrate ideals of positive sportsmanship both on and off the field of competition.
