2003 MIAC Men's Indoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week

March 4, 2003
Track
- Carleton College Distance Medley Relay Team: Bryan Donald (Sr., St. Paul, Minn.), Eric Svestka (Fr., Decorah, Iowa), Graham Zorn (Sr., Ashland, Wisc.), Matt Hooley (Jr., Columbia, Mo.) won the distance medley relay at the Carleton Co-Ed Open last weekend in a time of 10:05.97, which was not only an NCAA provisional qualifying time, but also a school and fieldhouse record, the third-fastest MIAC indoor time ever and the fourth-fastest time in NCAA Division III this season.

Field - Gustavus Adolphus College senior Josh Gysbers (Fond du Lac, Wisc.) won the pole vault event at the Carleton Co-Ed Open last weekend, clearing the bar in an NCAA Division III provisional qualifying mark of 15-1.

- University of St. Thomas sophomore Bryce Beckman (Winona, Minn.) won the 800 at the Snowshoe Open at the University of Minnesota, clocking a time of 1:54.44. Beckman's time not only eclipsed the NCAA provisional standard, but is also the fastest in the MIAC this season.

Field - Gustavus Adolphus College senior Luke Speltz (Rollingstone, Minn.) put together a pair of NCAA provisional qualifying throws at the Gold Country Open at the University of Minnesota. Speltz won the shot put with a toss of 54-5 1/2, while also placing second in the 35-pound weight throw with a toss of 60-1.

- Hamline University senior Tom Kreger (Milton, Wis.) placed 10th in the 5K at the Iowa State Invitational, posting a school-record and NCAA Division III national qualifying time of 14:29.73.

Field - University of St. Thomas junior Joe Thomas (St. Paul, Minn.) was a double-winner in helping the UST men's track team win the four-team Minnesota-Wisconsin Border Battle. Thomas won the high jump with a leap of 6-6 3/4, then added a first in the triple jump, where he leapt 44-5 1/2.

- Augsburg College junior Mathew Shannon (Minneapolis, Minn.) ran an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 49.70, placing third in the 400 meters at the Minnesota State-Mankato Open. Shannon came back later in the meet to place second in the 200 meters with a time of 22.56.

Field - Hamline University junior Will Sallee (Spencer, Wis.) won the high jump at the UW-Stout Invitational, clearing the bar at 6-7 3/4, earning the Piper junior an NCAA provisional qualifying spot for t he NCAA Indoor Championships.

- Carleton College junior Matt Hooley (Columbia, Mo.) ran a 14:47.36 in winning the 5K at the Carleton Open last weekend. Hooley's time not only earned him the meet's 5K title, but it was also five seconds faster than the NCAA provisional, marked a Carleton fieldhouse record and was the second-fastest time in school history.

Field - Gustavus Adolphus College senior Luke Speltz (Rollingstone, Minn.) won both the shot put and the weight throw competitions as the Gustie Indoor Invitational last Thursday. Speltz won the weight throw with an NCAA provisional toss of 56-5 1/4, while also claiming a first in the shot put with a throw of 50-5.

- Carleton College senior Bryan Donald (St. Paul, Minn.) posted a conference-best time of 8:41.80 to win the 3,000 meters at the St. Olaf Triangular last week.

Field - St. Olaf senior John Gensmer (North Oaks, Minn.) cleared the bar at 13-10 - a conference-best this season - to win the St. Olaf Triangular last weekend.

January 21, 2003
Track - St. Olaf College sophomore Kelly Fulton (Billings, Mont.) won the 5,000 meters at the Minnesota State-Mankato Alumni Open last Saturday, crossing the finish line in a time of 15:21.92.

Field - St. Olaf College senior Marcus Hanson (Billings, Mont.) placed third in the shot put at the Minnesota State-Mankato Alumni Open last Saturday, finishing with a throw of 46-9.

Track
- University of St. Thomas senior Andrew Hilliard (Woodbury, Minn.) , the defending MIAC champion in the 400 hurdles and 4x400 and 4x100 relays, opened his indoor season by placing second in the 400 meter dash (50.70) and eighth in the 60 meters (7.20) at the Northwest Open in Minneapolis.

Field - University of St. Thomas junior Matt McLaughlin (Minnetonka, Minn.), competing in his first-ever collegiate meet, placed sixth in the 35-pound weight throw with a personal-best toss of 45-5 at the Northwest Open in Minneapolis.
