St. Olaf men's cross country senior star Grant Wintheiser (Sartell, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral) delighted the Oles' home fans Saturday with a tremendous performance at the team's home 2014 St. Olaf Invitational Cross Country Meet. Wintheiser ran to an individual victory while leading his team to a top-three finish among a talented field. For his performance, the MIAC sports information directors honored Wintheiser Tuesday with the MIAC Men's Cross Country Athlete-of-the-Week award.
In a field loaded with NCAA Division II, III and unattached talent, Wintheiser ran to the front of the pack, finishing first by completing the 8K course in 24:52.6 to win by four seconds and pace the 246-runner field. Wintheiser's individual performance helped St. Olaf finished third overall and first among MIAC teams with 61 points in a closer race with D-II Sioux Falls (49 points) and UW-Eau Claire (56). Wintheiser is the two-time defending MIAC men's cross country champion and a two-time All-American, and has now finished first in the first two races of his senior year.
The Oles are the defending NCAA Division III national champions and currently ranked No. 1 in the nation by the USTFCCCA. St. Olaf will take this weekend off and return to action next month. Wintheiser and his teammates will compete Oct. 3 at the Blugold Invitaitonal in Eau Claire, Wis., hosted by UW-Eau Claire.
