Three from MIAC named to Google Cloud Academic All-America softball team

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. -- A trio of Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) softball student-athletes were named to the Google Cloud Division III Academic All-America Third Team on Tuesday, including Bethel outfielder Mariah Uphoff, Gustavus infielder Aly Freeman, and St. Thomas pitcher Kierstin Anderson-Glass.

Anderson-Glass (Jr. | Inver Grove Heights, Minn. | Visitation) added one more honor to an already accolade-filled junior campaign that also included NFCA All-America, MIAC Pitcher of the Year and MIAC Playoff MVP distinctions. The junior led Division III with 15 shutouts this season and ranked second in the nation with 26 wins to go along with a 0.79 earned-run average, fourth-best in D-III. An exercise science major with a 3.47 grade-point average, Anderson-Glass is the 18th Tommie softball player to earn Academic All-America honors in the last 22 seasons.

Freeman (Omaha, Neb. | Marian) went 8-9 in 101.2 innings with an ERA of 2.96 for Gustavus this season. At the plate, the Omaha, Neb. native hit .349 while slugging a team-leading .670. She also posted a team-best 11 multiple-hit games and nine multiple RBI-games. Freeman started 17 games in the circle and 18 games at third base. A biology major with a perfect 4.0 GPA, Freeman is the 10th Gustie softball player to receive All-America honors and the first for the program since 2012.

Uphoff (Lakeville, Minn. | South) hit .397 for the Royals this season, starting all 38 games in the Bethel outfield. The junior posted a .428 on-base percentage with 52 hits, 35 runs, and 15 RBI. Uphoff has a 3.96 GPA while majoring in relational communications. She is the second Bethel softball player to receive Academic All-America honors and the first since 2003.

The Division III Google Cloud Academic All-America® program is financially supported by the NCAA Division III national governance structure to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2018-19 Division III Academic All-America® teams.
