ST. PAUL, Minn. - St. Catherine University head basketball coach Don Mulhern has been invited to be one of nine head coaches in Australia this month for the eighth time in his career. Mulhern's international coaching experience will take him to Gold Coast, Australia, July 14-23 where he will spend his time coaching a team of high school-aged girls from the across the United States in the 23rd annual Down Under Hoops Competition.
Down Under Sports, an youth sports organization based in Utah, started in 1996 providing international opportunities in the sports of basketball, cross country, football, golf, track & field, and volleyball. The ten-day trip will include multiple days of team practice and conclude with a two-day tournament and awards ceremony.
Mulhern is no rookie to international coaching, as he has completed trips to Spain, Germany, France, and Italy in this 30+ years of coaching basketball. Mulhern said about this opportunity, " I am honored to have the chance to coach another international team in my career. I deeply value the opportunity to learn from other coaches and observe their styles."
This honor is added to the veteran coaches long list of accolades he has amassed over the years. Aforementioned, this is Mulhern's eighth international coaching trip in his career. Mulhern was also recently honored by the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) for his time prior to St. Kate's coaching at the University of Wisconsin-Superior. His women's basketball team was honored as the Team of the Decade by the conference in addition to several of his former players earning conference awards. At UW-Superior, he was named WIAC Coach of the Year in 2012 and 2015 and UMAC Coach of the Year in 2016. Mulhern and his staff, including current assistant coach, Trent Davis, were named the staff of the year by the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association in 2015.
In Mulhern's two seasons coaching the Wildcats, Mulhern has an overall record of 23-28 making it to the MIAC Playoffs in his first season at the helm. His players has garnered several MIAC All-Conference selections, plus this season, first-year Sam Orth was named to the MIAC All-First-Year Team.
