The St. Olaf women's golf team continued its winning ways over the weekend, finishing first by a convincing margin at the Carleton Invitational, hosted by the Oles cross-town rivals in Northfield, Minn., Saturday and Sunday. Senior Molly Knutson (Edina, Minn.) played a huge role in her team's win, as she finished third individually to help St. Olaf cruise to its 13-shot team victory. Knutson was especially good over the final 18 holes and finished just three shots behind the medalist. For her performance, Knutson was named the MIAC Women's Golf Athlete-of-the-Week.
Knutson got off to a good start and helped St. Olaf take a big first-day lead when she carded an 80 over Saturday's first 18 holes. However, she turned in the top score in the entire field Sunday with her 3-over-par 75, to move into the top three and finish with a two-day total of 155. St. Olaf finished with a 645 as a team to top the nine-team field. This season, Knutson has averaged 82.8 strokes per 18 holes, and that number ranks eighth in the MIAC. In eight event appearances, she has four top-20 finishes, three top-10 and a top-five.
The latest win was another highlight in a season full of them for the Oles. Knutson and her teammates captured their second-straight MIAC title in October and have now won four of their last five tournaments. St. Olaf has one final tune-up this weekend before the NCAA Division III Championships. The Oles will compete in the Blugold Spring Invitational in Eau Claire, Wis., Sunday and Monday, before heading to Destin, Fla., for the national championships May 14-17.
