Simi Valley, Calif/Royal
Carleton's Shannon Holden (Simi Valley, Calif./Royal) didn't let the long winter layoff interrupt her tremendous breakout season, as the MIAC's individual medalist notched the second victory of her young career. The Knights' rookie claimed first-place with a great performance in a head-to-head dual with conference foe Gustavus, as her team played exactly even with the Gusties. For her performance, Holden was named the MIAC Women's Golf Athlete-of-the-Week for the second time in 2013-14.
Though it was her first-ever round at Le Sueur (Minn.) Country Club, Holden played like a seasoned veteran, carding a 5-over-par 77 to card the low score of the round and claim the second medalist honor of her career. Holden and the rest of the golfers battled windy conditions that only yielded two scores below 80. She helped her team score 335, which matched Gustavus' score in the dual-meet tie. Holden's score marked the fourth-straight round she finished 79 or better, and her 13th score in the 70s out of 16 rounds this season. Her stroke average of 78.7 currently ranks No. 2 in the MIAC in 2013-14.
The Knights will try to continue their strong season this weekend in familiar territory, as the team will host a two-day, 36-hole tournament. The Carleton Invitational will be held April 26 and 27 at the Northfield Golf Club in Northfield, Minn. Saturday's first round tees off at 1 p.m. ad Sunday's final round starts at 11 a.m. The Knights have two more regular-season events on the schedule as the MIAC runner-up tries to earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Championships.
