Minnetonka, Minn. / Wayzata
Saint Benedict's Stephanie Kirk (Minnetonka, Minn./Wayzata) is off to a great start in her first year of collegiate hockey, and she delivered her best performance to date in the Blazers' first series of 2014. The first-year forward had a career-high three-point effort, including her first collegiate game-winning goal in a thrilling 6-5 nonconference win over Concordia-Wis. For her performance, Kirk was named the MIAC Women's Hockey Athlete-of-the-Week.
The Blazers opened the 2014 portion of the schedule with a trip to face Concordia-Wis., and dropped Friday's game by a score of 3-1. But CSB responded with one of its best offensive efforts and victories of the season behind a stellar performance by Kirk. The Blazer first-year forward scored her team's first goal and assisted on another before netting the game winner with just three minutes to play. Kirk leads CSB with eight goals and 10 points this season, and her eight goals rank third in the MIAC. All eight of her goals have come in four two-goal performances.
Thanks to the split, Kirk and Saint Benedict improved to 4-7 overall, and they are currently 1-5 in conference play. The Blazers will stay out of conference for one more weekend as they have a home-and-home with UW-Superior coming up. Friday they'll host UW-S at 7 p.m. and Saturday they'll travel to Superior, Wis., for a 7 p.m. start. CSB returns to conference play at Concordia Jan. 17-18.
