Fergus Falls, Minn. / Fergus Falls
The Bethel women's hockey team continued its hot start to the 2013-14 season with a sweep of Augsburg to open conference play over the weekend. Senior All-American Cristina Masten (Fergus Falls, Minn.) showcased her offensive firepower in the sweep, with a hat trick and a total of four goals and two assists in the two victories to get the Royals off to a great start in MIAC action. As a result of her high-scoring performance, Masten was named the MIAC Women's Hockey Athlete-of-the-Week.
Masten started MIAC play with an authoritative performance in Friday's 6-2 home win against the Auggies. She notched a hat trick and a four-point performance with three goals and one assist. The following day she contributed a goal and an assist in a 4-0 road win at Augsburg. Though the season is young, Masten leads the MIAC in goals (five) and points (10) while ranking second in assists (five). Her four goals and six points in conference play also lead the league, and her two assists rank fourth. Masten is just nine points away from breaking Bethel's all-time school record for points in a career.
Thanks to the weekend sweep, the Royals are now 3-1 overall this season and in a four-way tie atop the MIAC standings with a 2-0 record and four points. Bethel received 10 points in this week's USCHO.com Division III Women's Poll and is just outside the Top 10. The Royals host a big MIAC series this week when Concordia comes to town for a pair of conference games. Friday's game begins at 7 p.m., with Saturday's to follow at 2 p.m.
