St. Cloud, Minn. / Apollo
It was quite a weekend for the Saint Benedict women's hockey team and goalie Jenna Traut (St. Cloud, Minn./Apollo). The Blazers swept No. 7 Gustavus, ending the Gusties' 30-game MIAC winning streak, and handing the defending MIAC champs their first sweep since 2003-04. Traut was masterful in goal, as the junior made 73 saves in the two wins with a 2.00 goals against average and a .948 save percentage. For her role in the weekend-long upset, Traut was named the MIAC Women's Hockey Athlete-of-the-Week.
Traut held the fort Friday at Gustavus aver her team surged out to a big lead. In fact, 28 of her season-high 39 saves came in the second and third periods as CSB held off a Gustavus comeback attempt in the 4-2 road upset. A day later, the Gusties surged out to a 2-0 lead, but Traut shut them out the rest of the way as her team roared back with four unanswered goal and another 4-2 upset. The Blazer goalie stopped 34 shots Saturday, as she became the first MIAC goalie to hold Gustavus to four goals in a series this season. This season, Traut is 5-4 with 218 saves in 539:00 minutes. In conference play, her 142 saves, 2.60 goals against average and .916 save percentage all rank in the top 10.
The two big wins helped the Blazers improve to 6-13 season, and 3-9 in conference play. Now with six points, the Blazers moved up to eighth in the MIAC standings. Traut and her teammates hope to build off their big weekend with another big series on tap this weekend. Friday, Saint Benedict hosts Hamline at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday they travel to St. Paul to take on the Pipers again at 2 p.m.
