Livonia, Mich. / Victory Honda
The Hamline women's hockey team broke through with its first two wins of the 2013-14 season over the weekend as it swept Marian (Wis.) in nonconference play. The Pipers packed an offensive punch in the two victories behind the tremendous play of junior Jordan Verleye (Livonia, Mich.). Verleye racked up three goals and one assist in the two wins while helping HU score seven total goals over the weekend. For her performance, Verleye was named the MIAC Women's Hockey Athlete-of-the-Week.
Things didn't look good early in Friday's game, as Marian jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period. However, in a span of just 2:01, Verleye lit the lamp twice and pulled Hamline into a 2-2 tie in an eventual 3-2 victory. A day later, she again tied the game with a first-period goal, then set up a teammate for a score that made it 3-1 in the Pipers' 4-1 victory. Thanks to her four-point weekend, Verleye now ranks fifth in the MIAC with eight points this season. Her five goals are tied for the fourth-most in the league, and her four power play goals are tied for the most in the MIAC.
Thanks to the big nonconference sweep, Hamline improved to 2-5-1 and remained 0-3-1 in conference play. The Pipers will try to get their first conference victory of the season with a big series coming up this weekend. Friday, Hamline travels to Blaine, Minn., to face Bethel at 7 p.m. and Saturday the Pipers will host the Royals at Warner Coliseum. Saturday's face off is set for 2 p.m.
