The St. Thomas women's swimming and diving team enjoyed a great two days in their home pool over the weekend as they hosted the St. Thomas Invite. The Tommies - led by a great distance performance by Elise Guenther (Byron, Minn./Rochester John Marshall) - finished first in the eight-team field, as the sophomore won both of her freestyle races. For her performance, Guenther was named the MIAC Women's Swimming and Diving Athlete-of-the-Week.
Guenther swept the titles in the 1,650-yard freestyle and 500-yard freestyle in her home pool to help lead her team to its first-place finish. She claimed victory in the 500 with a time of 5:23.53, and added her 1,600 win with a time of 18:05.84. Guenther was particularly impressive in the 1,650, winning by more than 30 seconds, and nearly equaling her previous best time, which is tops in the MIAC and a meet and pool record as well. The Tommie sophomore has the conference's best time in both the 1,650- and 1,000-yard freestyle events, and she ranks in the top 10 in the 500 as well.
St. Thomas will be back in action Saturday when they host rival Saint Benedict for a dual meet in their home pool. The Tommie-Blazer swimming showdown is schedule for a 1 p.m. start on Dec. 15. Following that competition, Guenther and her teammates will enjoy more than a month off for semester break and the holiday season. UST returns to action at the Meet of Saints at home on Jan. 19.
