Saturday, the St. Thomas women's swimming and diving team beat MIAC rival Gustavus in a dual meet to complete the first undefeated dual meet season in program history. Leading the way was sophomoreMariann Kukielka (Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View) with one individual first-place finish and a pair of impressive relay splits to help the Tommies finish first and second in her respective races. For her performance in the historic win, Kukielka was named the MIAC Women's Swimming and Diving Athlete-of-the-Week.
St. Thomas benefitted from Kukielka's great perfromance in the 100-yard butterfly, as she claimed first-place in the event with a time of 59.13. She swam a spectacular split of 25.88 in the 200-yard medley relay to help St. Thomas finish first against the Gusties, who had been ranked No.1 in the MIAC in that event. She also swam her fastest split of the year - 25.68 - to help the Tommies finish second in the 200-yard freestyle relay. This season, Kukielka is ranked No. 2 in the MIAC in the 100-yard fly, and No. 12 in the 200 fly.
Kukielka and her teammates have one more chance to tune-up prior to the 2013 MIAC Swimming and Diving Championships, which will be held Feb. 14-16 at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center in Minneapolis. St. Thomas will host the Conference Invitational in its home pool this weekend with Friday's action starting at 6 p.m. and Saturday's portion beginning at noon. The Tommies will also send its divers to the Minnesota Challenge at the U of M on Feb. 9.
